Creating the Weaver Way
This partnership project which is part funded by Rural Enterprise will deliver two exemplar access projects on the Weaver Way route and costed proposals for the rest of the 119km length. Access improvements will include surfacing and signing of 1.2km of towpath at Frodsham and Nantwich. The project involves substantial public consultation and provides essential proposals to facilitate future grant applications and delivery of the route.
Connect2 is £42.9 million project submitted by the cycling charity Sustrans to the BIG Lottery Living Landmarks. It aims to remove 50 barriers to people’s mobility across England, so that walking and cycling become the easiest way to move around a local area. The project aims to solve the problem of severance created between the communities of Hartford and Leftwich when the Riversdale Bridge was closed. It connects ten local schools, two colleges and three railway stations to create a sustainable alternative to car transport for school children and residents.
Connected Market Towns
This project will deliver key surface and stile upgrades together with signage, leaflets and promotional work.
The project also aims to link market towns through providing joint marketing signage and promotional work along the route.
Projects are being delivered at:
Access is being improved for disabled users by improving surfacing and signage. The contract is starting on site in August 2007 with funding from Rural Enterprise.
The towpath is being resurfaced to provide a safe route to school. Improvements are proposed to repair the riverbanks in sections. Funding has been provided by WREN landfill tax credits, British Waterways, Cheshire County Council, Sustrans and Cycle England. Work is proposed to start early in 2008.
Work is being carried out to improve access for special needs users following a disability audit of the site. This work is being managed by Cheshire County Council’s Countryside Management Service to improve inclines and surfacing. Work and will be carried out during 2007 and 2008. Funding is being provided by the North West Development Agency and Cheshire County Council.
In partnership with Middlewich Vision, funding is currently being sought to improve the towpath through the town centre. The aim is to upgrade both surfaces and signage to link the canalside to the town centre shopping streets.
Nantwich – Welsh Row to the Marina
British waterways have improved access to the town centre by constructing new steps and resurfacing the towpath. A partnership arts project with Walbank School has created interpretive panels and a large wooded horse.
Nantwich Marina to Acton
The recently completed project has extended the towpath improvement to Acton Village. This partnership project funded by Rural Enterprise, British Waterways, Cheshire County Council and Acton Parish Council has resurfaced the towpath, repaired the canal bridge and constructed new steps and a link to Acton Village. It is hoped to be able to install new signs soon.
Nantwich Riverside
New paths have been constructed to improve access along the River Weaver and Nantwich Lake. Access has been improved under the railway bridge using floating metal structures. Further works are planned to link the riverside along existing rights of way to the canal.
Three completed projects deliver approximately 7 km of multi-user route along the Weaver Navigation starting at Acton Bridge on the A 49 and finishing at Pickerings Cut. Links are also improved through Dutton Park. Look out for new tree planting and meadow restoration completed by the Woodland Trust and Cheshire Wildlife Trust. Buzzards are frequently seen overhead with the occasional hobby or peregrine falcon.
