Dutton Locks to Pickering Cut Improvements (Acton Bridge)

  • This project, through successful partnership working, improved a well used Public Bridleway for all users; pedestrians, equestrians and cyclists of all ages and abilities. The route contributes to improvements in the Weaver Valley for rural tourists visiting this area of Vale Royal.
  • The project also contributes to Greenways in Vale Royal & The Mersey Forest, the National Cycleway Route Number 5 and The Weaver Way.
  • The project was identified as part of the research into ‘Cycle Linkages’ in The Mersey Forest area of Vale Royal. It is located in a honey pot site in the Weaver Valley. The only way to access the site is on foot, bicycle or horse, so materials have been boated onto site. The project sought to improve access for all user groups which has successfully been achieved.
  • The river wildlife habitats are particularly valuable and all has been done to protect and preserve their value and significance. To ensure minimum damage, the work was implemented in March before the main breeding season started.
  • British Waterways have installed a visitor counter on the route, so the partnership will be able to demonstrate increased use of the Greenway.
